I want to move a gas line for a basement project. Can it run outside for about 12 feet and then come into the house and join the rest of the pipe to the furnace? The gas pipe outside will run from the city gas main and then run along a house wall (at the side of the house which is never used so I dont mind a ugly pipe running along side of it.) Does it need to be in special conduit? How high from the ground does it need to be? Are there any length restrictions running it outside?

Your LOCAL inspector will govern this. There will be specs as to whether the pipe has to be galvanized, painted black iron, or something else. There will also be specs as to how far above grade it must be, and whether protection is required. These specs vary from place to place.
