Pet hair clogging up AC--need advice

I have a question. My 1996 Carrier AC is continually freezing up. It was doing this last summer too, and the repairman came twice, BUT I would not let him spray whatever chemical he had to clean out the coils, because he could not garuntee me that it would not be toxic to myself (allergies & asthma) or my parrots.

I keep my filter clean, and to my knowledge there isn't any leaks, or is it low on freon. BUT I have just turned it on this past week. I had prolonged it as long as I could stand it. It was in the 90's last week

Before I call the repairman again to clean out the coils, I need to know, is this chemical toxic? What kind of chemical is it?

My only alternative is to let them pull the coils and clean it, at a cost of $300 plus labor.

I'm not 100% sure but it is my very firm belief that the chemical used to clean the coils is 100% safe (as long as your not drinking it ).
It is a common procedure and well worth it.

Thank you for your response. I was still not sure. I called the avian vet at Texas A&M, and they told me, NO it was not safe for birds. It is because it has poly glycol__something, ether, and butane. If the birds could be removed from the house for at least 3 days, then it would be ok, but since it takes about 3 days for the acid to cycle through the coils and eat away all the goop, it is better for them to be removed from the house.

That wasn't an option for me. So I ended up going ahead with the $250. pull and clean the coil job. Thaty's still cheaper than killing 2 birds that cost over 2000.00. I love my babies.

BUT it is safe for humans. Go figure. That's why they used canaries in coal mines.
