  • Blower motor going bad???

We have a problem that has been happening from time to time with our furnace. When it comes time for the blower to kick on, sometimes you can just hear a hum. Ive been near the furnace when this has happened and the sound is coming from the motor. Its like its trying to go but it just doesnt. Its an electric buzz sound. It does this for maybe 30-40 seconds then the gas shuts off and then the motor clicks. 20-30 seconds later the motor kicks over. It has never not came on, it just does this. Its done this that Im aware of, maybe 10 times in the last couple of months. the rest of the time it works properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

check the motor bearings. most are of the oil-lite type sintered bronze which is porous. the bearings are set in a self aligning housing that normally is saturated with oil. with the passage of air and heat those bearings dry out if not maintained on a yearly basis. see if you can oil the bearing felts - either take out the motor and oil them or look for oil holes in the end bells. also look for a capacitor, there may be one there. the capacitor upsets the inrush of current to get the motor spinning then cuts out of there is a centrigula starting switch inside one of the end bells. the clicking you hear could be the flyballs on the motor shaft opening and closing the start circuit.
