  • A/C not working....more details inside

Had a problem about 1 week ago. Outside compressor wasn't working. Yanked out the relay and boom...A/C was working again in my house.

    Had an old thermostat...

My buddy told me to buy a new thermostat that could act in place of the relay at the compressor so i didn't put a new relay in.

It has been about 7 days, yeah im lazy..im a plumber what do you expect?

Anyways..came home today...no A/C. No fan blowing..nothing. Air handler not running. I replaced the thermostat with a digital. I have 4 wires coming out of the wall. G, Y, W, and RH. There is a jumper between RH and RC.

When i turn the fan on and put it on cool..i hear a click at the thermostat, but thats it. The air handler/fan still won't kick on. The compressor outside isn't kicking on either. I turn all breakers off and back on..when i did this the compressor would kick on for a brief second then go back off. The air handler and fan never kick on.

The capacitor on the fan was replaced about 2 years ago..perhaps i need a new one?

I also tried touching G to RH..and no fan. I should also note i try it on cool and heat and off with just fan on. Nothing. Also the fan/blower spins fine in the air handler if i push it. Just doesn't keep spinning heh.

My buddy who owns an A/C company is out of town for a couple days and i can't reach him. Hopefully you all can help me. Thx.

Finally tracked my friend down...told me either i have a short (which Ed may have been getting at but i couldn't test it) or the transformer. I played with it a bit last night and removed it thinking it might be the cause. Anyways..he gave a new transformer to day..i threw it in..and bingo...all up and running. Just wanted to post the answer.
