  • a/c unit not turning on

I have a a/c unit that is not turning with the air hnadler. Everyhting but the outside unit is working. Once in awhile it try to turn on but only for a moment. Is this something that I could fix (a part or something) or does it need a professional?

is this a remote condenser/compressor unit? with power off to the outside unit see if you can spin the fan by hand. there is a motor that drives the condenser fan and a hermetically sealed compressor. a contactor operates the fan motor and another operates the compressor. both have 24 volts for the control circuit or it may have 120 volts for the control. in the control box look for a step down transformer - 240 to 120 OR 24 volt. the secondary of the transformer may have a small cartridge fuse that protects the secondary circuit. see if that's blown. the compressor may have a hi and low pressure limit switch. each may have its own external reset button. try it! too high a pressure will trip the hi limit and low or no freon will trip the low limit. sequence of operation, the compressor comes on first then the condenser fan.
