Whole-House Fans- Makes & Models

I'm looking for experience or "war-stories" on makes and models of whole house fans....fans that blow air from your living space up to the attic- not for the sake of the attic, but they pull air into the house from open windows.

There are not a lot of choices at the local home supply places and I fear getting a cheap, piece-of-junk one.

Also, after having a direct drive and then a belt-driven one in previous houses- I am thinking direct drive is better.....I know the "advice" and price tag says belt-driven is better, but with our last house- every few months we had to lube the belt, lest it make LOUD squeak.

Anyone have brands they love? Brands they hate? A good source?

It has dawned on me that the local electrical store probably can find a brand or two, but may have no experience on which brands/models are better.....

Oh, yea, I anticipate getting at 30" model.

I agree with so few choices for whole house fans. Try some industrial supply houses instead of box stores. MSC is one McMaster-Carr is another, Grainger Supply. Reputable motor manufacturers usually have the best choice - Baldor Motor, GE, Westinghouse, Reliance, Emerson's been around for ages! Broan, Nutone, etc.
