Can I use just the fan in my furnace?

My fireplace insert produces a lot of heat but it stays in the living room; the rest of the house stays cold. The intake for the gas furnace (a very old GE model) is near the fireplace. Can I wire a jumper and switch over the fan/limit control so that the fan can push warm air from the living room all over the house?
