  • Hot water heat - maintenance?

I have an old two-story house with hot water heat. The registers on the first floor are fine, but I can't seem to completely shut them down - I'm not sure if the valves need replacement or not. The second floor is much colder. Some heat comes out of some of the registers, but some never fully heat. I can also hear water running constantly into the ones on the second-floor. I've tried bleeding all the air out of them, but it seems like there isn't enough pressure to push all the air out and let them fill with water. I've tried to find information on the maintenance that is recommended, but haven't had much luck. This is my second year in the house - the first year things worked pretty well, but not so well this year.

Sounds like you need to check the water pressure in the heating system. The pressure should only be high enough to get the water to the highest point in the system plus a small margin.
The pressure is 2.3 ft for every 1 psi pressure in the system if you are single storey then 8-10 psi is enough 2 storey then say 12-15 psi is more than enough.
The fact that water is gurgling indicates air in the system.
The gauge on the boiler may be calibrated to read in ft rather than psi. then just allow enough pressure in ft to get above the highest point. Vertically from the boiler.
