I live in Arizona in the winter and would like to have a whole house attic fan. The furnace is in the garage and the house has a single cold air return ideally suited to where you would mount a whole house fan. Can I install the fan in the cold air return in the garage and just block off the cold air return from the furnace unit with a sliding door in the return duct when I run the fan? this way the fan would draw air from the outside (windows, doors etc) via the cold air return duct and exhaust it into the garage. The main difference would be that the air in the attic would not be affected at all. When the furnace or AC are in operation I would remove the sliding door in the return duct and place it in from of the fan unit to block air existing the cold air duct via the fan. The fan unit would be mounted vertically in the cold air duct - not horizontally as in most attic fan installations. What problems aren't I anticipating?
