  • Bryant Furnace burners not igniting

    Hello,

I have Bryant furnace with a propane conversion kit on it.
It has five burners and an igniter in the center. When the
furnace kicks on, only the two burners on either side of the
igniter light. The others *usually* do not, although I have seen up
to three ignite at once. The burners are directly behind the front
panel and I have looked for obstuctions and buildup, but there doesn't
seem to be any. Out of curiosity, I blew on the burners as the two
nearest the ingiter were light and wouldnt you know it, I got them
all to light and they all looked to be burning good. What would cause
these to not all ignite on thier own? If I need to give more information, please let me know.

I repair furnaces and run into this problem. Check to make sure your manifold is perfectly level ,if it isn't the gas will not be able to travel to each orffice and lite each one.the manifold is the round pipe that has the four orffices coming from it.

Well, I checked the level of the pipe and it seems to be good.
From the pictures below, I checked the level of the black pipe.
        I hope this was correct!
I have no experience with furnaces, so I am not sure what else to
check. Here is more information, from what I have seen.

The igniter lights and a second after that I see a small flame
comming from one of the orifices like this. The igniter is in the back just to the left of the one with the flame.

A second or two later two of the five burners light.

Again, I can blow some air on the flames and make the other ignite,
but they dont light on thier own.

Does this sound more like something is dirty?
Is my gas pressure too low?
I have no clue about this, but I am trying to learn, so any help
        would be appreciated.

        Thanks!

I had this exact problem this week. The heater repair guy said my burner was clogged and i needed to get a new set up $275.00 I decided to take it apart and i cleaned out the black tube and the little gold plugs that screw into the tube. Then i took the horn looking things and cleaned them with a big pipe cleaner. They were so full of sute the hole on the end was half the correct size and not cicular any more. But it fixed the problem. I see from your pictrues you have pretty much the same set up as me. The heater guy unplugged the two wires in the center of that box, one red and one blue. So i didn't know for sure which went on top. it seems to work both ways but i'm sure there is a right way would you mind telling me or taking a picture of yours that shows the wires connecting to the metal box? Thank you.

mamyt - thanks for the info, I will give it a shot. I hate to have to
remove the black pipe, as it looks like it would require removing
the "box" I think you are refering to. Was there much buildup inside this, or was most of it cleaning the orifies on it?
The "horn looking things" I could easily remove and clean with no
            issues I think.

Is this the box you were talking about?

I would try cleaning the orfices first. With mine you can take off the little things on the black pipe. They are gold things that screw into the holes of the black pipe. If yours are like that you can take them off and put them in a glass of cocacola. pepsi will work but coke is stronger. It will clean off all the soute just rinse them with water afterwards and screw them back in. The black pipe it's self wasn't gunked up as far as i can tell. thanks for the picture of the wires.

I;ve read the replies and if the manifold is leval Amy is probably right the inshot burners are probably cloged they are usually quite easy to remove usually there is a L shaped piece of metal holding them in ,some times you must remove the manifold which isn;t as hard as it may appear, you first shut of the gas then with two pipe wrenches you loosen the universal (the big nut s on the manifold) then there is usualy 4 screws 2 on each side ,i usualy try to put the manifold aside without removing wireing though if you do wright down the wires removed on a piece of paper and install the same later,be sure when your burners are out to wire brush the side slits where the gas travels from burner to burner ,i presume your gas pressure is fine since the burners can be light manualy(P.S.,i usually use a barbacue lighter to ignight the unlight burners).

Thanks for all the great info.

I am going to go cut off the gas and power to this pup and see how
                    much damage I can do!

I will let you all know how it turns out.

Took all the inshot burners out, didnt even have to take the bracket
off. One screw for each burner, was a snap! Took them out the garage,
but they didnt appear to be that bad. I took a flip-it knife and
scraped all the carbon I could find off the burning end, paying
special attention to the "feeder lanes" that run between them.
I put them all back on, checking level on the manifold.
The gas pressure must be fine, because all those pups fired up with
nice blue flames! I watched for several cycles and it appears to be
working great now. The heat is alot warmer now too.

Thanks to everyone for help/suggestions! Problem solved with minor
effort, and no cash from my pocket!

That is great to hear!! It's so nice to have heat after a week of using only the fire place.
