  • Cold Air From Heat Pump

My heat pump is 3 years old. Sometimes when it goes into the defrost mode it will run and run for maybe 2-3 hours blowing nothing but cold air. We checked the air and it will be down around 65 - 66 degrees and just stay at that point until we cut on the emergency heat at the thermostat. If I check the outside unit it will be running and making a funny noise, but I am no HVAC man so I don't know what it should sound like. I am afraid to go off and leave the unit running because if it goes into this mode then it will not quit until we shut it off. What could be causing it to stay in what I call the defrost mode and blow cold air. We heat the house to 71 then it cools it off back to 65. Doesn't make much sense. Sure doesn't help my heating bill. It doesn't do this every time it goes into defrost but it does it pretty often.

Yes, this is the same unit I posted about before that it was tripping the breaker and we found that mice had gotten into the junction panel on the outside unit and chewed the wires up causing it to short out at random.

Would the shorting have caused anything to go wrong with the system causing it to stay in defrost mode?
    Any help appreciated

When you had the bad wires the unit was over amping and you could get feed
backs that can damage controls, You might have to have a tech recheck
    your control operation. Later Paul
