  • Monitor 422 problems

I've got a Monitor 422 that has recently developed problems.

It will run, or attempt to run, for about 10 minutes or so. During this time the burner status will switch between showing all 8 bars lit, and no bars lit. I can also hear a clicking noise. But it does seem to be putting out some heat.

After approximately 10 minutes or so it will stop running. The burner status will show 8 blinking bars, and the LCD will blink 88:88.

Any suggestions on what to check?

88:88 indicates the computer has gone into a lockout condition. you must unplug the heater wait a few minutes then plug it in again and re-start the heater. dull clicking sounds indicate no fuel in the fuel sump. Shut off the tank outside, remove the filter element and change with a new one. While you have the element out, look for frozen water in the filter canister. Water condensate will form in your tank and will freeze in the bottom of it. Kero floats on water. You may need to suck out the water in the bottom of your fuel tank. I will put up a diagram of how to do this later. remove the fuel line at the heater and the tank and blow out with compressed air. Remove the wires on the solenoid pump and remove the screws holding on the fuel sump plate. Pull the pump out, straight up and look at the bottom of the pump. if there is a brownish deposit, flush it off with GUMOUT carb cleaner. On the side of the heater remove two screws and plate and take out the sump filter. Spray this clean with GUMOUT and replace. Look into the sump and see if there is any of this brownish crap inside. If there is, un hitch the fuel line and remove four more screws that hold the sump in the heater. remove the sump and use some more GUMOUT and clean out the crap. Use a Q tip to get in the corners inside. Try not to disturb the float pivot, mechanical lockout lever and needle valve. Flush out the inside. blow out if you have an air compressor. Now, put everything back and re-establish fuel flow to the heater. Press ON and reset your setpoint for heat. After a 300 second purge the heater should start pumping. There may be a few seconds of dull clicking as the pump primes. Check the bottom part of the combustion pot. Where that silver cap is it whould be warm to the touch. This means the igniter is working. When fuel hits the burner mat it should ignite. The combustion ring should start to glow red-orange and have blue tipped flames around it. The flamerod should start to glow orange hot. Your heater should come on.
