  • Monitor Heater 41 smell

I have a Monitor heater 41 that when it starts up it causes the entire house to smell like K-1. The smell can be horrible sometimes. Anyone out there have any solutions?

A Monitor heater M41 is at least 25 years old. When was the last time it was cleaned out or went through a maintenance overhaul? Thw whitish gaskets when new have some resiliency and bounce back when loosened and retightened.
check these: the fuel connection is tight to the heater. the fuel connection to the sump is tight. [these both are flared connections] the constant level control works.
Now, if it is burned kero fumes you smell, check all gaskets under covers for tightness. there's a square gasket connecting the combustion pot to the first fin of the heat exchanger. The outlet of the heat exchanger [last fin] has a rubber O ring inside the heater where that offset tubing is. The inside of the outlet tube [to the outside] has an O ring in it. The igniter and flame rod fitting has a ceramic fiber gasket under them. Take apart the combustion pot cover and remove the burner ring. Look down inside the pot and see if there is a build up of black carbon on the bottom. This must be removed. It may also be possible that there is a hole that developed in the combustion pot bottom or side. In this case the combustion pot must be replaced. There is a gasket between the pot and heater floor.
