  • Motor oil in kerosene

Ok, straight up here is how it started.

I had a jug (about a gallon) of used motor oil hanging around in the shed so I dumped it in the kerosene tank. I figured it would burn up with no issues. We have 2 filters on the line so it didn't seem like too big an issue to me. The tank reads 1/4 full, but we all know how accurate those things are.

I decided to change the filters too, one is a Sid Harvey spin-on type and the other is one of those cog-shaped fiber jobs. I also cleaned the fuel strainer which was full of some crusty stuff. Bled the lines and the heater looks like it is getting oil.

Now the heater (a Monitor 441) won't stay lit.

I opened it up and cleaned out the combustion chamber and the flame sensor.

I'm hoping the problems with not staying lit are co-incidental with my bone-headed and lazy disposal of motor oil. I mean, the oil is VERY diluted and the kerosene still burns. I know this because I threw all the rags into the burn pile and they burned up very quick.

Maybe that oil is fouling everything up? Maybe my wife will have a good reason to bust my chops?

Will even that small amount of motor oil mess up my kerosene?

I'm afraid so! Monitor specifically says no biodiesel, no #1 fuel oil [diesel fuel] Guess yer gonna hafta dump the tank someplace and start over.
