copper pipe corrosion.

Hi all,
Corrosion in the pipes can lead to massive water damage in our home , especially if the leak is a slow leak located inside of the wall. Can anyone explain me how to prevent corrosion in copper pipes ???

copper pipes in direct contact with the air forms an oxide coating which inhibits corrosion. copper pennies turn brown, copper water pipes turn brown. copper pipes in contact with galvanized pipe [zinc coating] forms a battery. lime mixed with water is caustic and eats away at the zinc. called galvanic action. lead solder is outlawed for joints. solder rich in silver alloy is recommended. copper pipe and tubing in contact with water forms a red oxide coating which is non toxic.

You need to check the ph level in your water, anything below 7.0 is considered acidic and will eat copper pipe

Unless you have a dielectric corrosion going on copper pipe will last a long time. Alot of companies sell people on pipe replacement out of fear not fact. Why would you think you have corrosion?

If corrosion does occur, look into epoxy lining instead of repiping everything. Look up E-pipe or epoxy pipe lining.

Unless you know they're corroded, don't let it worry you. It's a headache.

Replace all the copper with PEX, the stuff is cheap and its a no brainer to install, that's why the unskilled are all using it, and the plus is no one wants to steal the stuff like copper, the copper you rip out can be sold to the metal recycler for decent money also. just stop by the big box store and grab a installation guide.

Chlorinated water can eat copper just like a low PH.
