Squeeky Tub Fixtures

Hi!
Need some suggestions for a loud, very annoying squeak when the hot and cold shower knobs are turned on...terrible! I took the knobs off, and slopped on a bunch of Jasco Stem Lube, on the stem threads, and the inside the plastic handle...which pretty much did nothing.
Just wondering if replacing the handles would work? They're really old. I'm renting an older cottage.
Seemed like the noise wasn't as apparent when the knobs were really loose...but don't want them like that.
Can someone save me from the aggravating squeak!!?? Help!

you are correct that smearing grease on the stems, exposed threads on the stems and in the handles does absolutely nothing.

In order to lube the stems they need to be pulled out, but be careful here, there are no fixture stops for a shower so you will need to turn the water off at the house main water shutoff, then open the valves and allow the residual water in the lines to drain out.

You can then remove the handles and pull the stems out and lube the threads of the stems where they fit inside the valve body. While you have the stems out, check the bibb washers and seats.

When replacing the stems make sure they are turned to the full open position before you screw them into the valve body or you will damage the bibb washers.

Next, check the clearance between the back of the handles and the trim escutcheons. If the handle is rubbing the escutcheons that can also cause a noise.

After you turn the water back on you will need to go to each faucett in the house and open the faucett to allow any air in the system to bleed out. If there is air in the line you will see a lot of spitting coming out of the faucett. If so, just let it run until you have full flow then go to the next faucett.

Thanks Lazypup!..I called a friend, and found out that's what was involved..the info in your email is more informative..so I printed it out. I'll give it my best effort, sounds simple enoough. I'll have to get the my landlord to shut the water off.

You'll find that Lazypup is the most informed person on this forum. He just won't give you the easiest way to overcome your problem, but will cite certain directives that stem from the problems.
