  • Lower t'stat for water heater...

I get 240 across the leads for the upper t'stat/element. I get zero for the lower t'stat/element. Except....I get 120 for each leg when checked to ground. There's also continuity on each leg between upper and lower 'stat/elements. Of coarse, the lower element won't work unless it's getting 240. What's going on?

I fixed it!! I left it alone!! It apparently healed itself. All is well now.

      you fixed it?

the water heater is wired for sequential operation.
when you first start up the heater, the upper element is on. when its temp is satisfied it switches to the lower element.
when you draw water off the top, cold water goes down through the dip tube to the bottom. the bottom element comes on.
hot water stratifies to the top.
the only time the upper element is on is when there is a large demand for hot water.
