I just bought a townhouse that has a sump pump. This Item in the picture is up close in the bushes by the outdoor faucet

It could be a sewer clean out, or a access to a shutoff valve underground or a buried cesspool, Take the cap off and see whats inside

I took the top off and it curves as it goes into the ground under the hose. I think the house has a French drain underneath the foundation that connects to the sump pump. No valves I can see for a shut off. Doubt it is for a cesspool , there is a sewer lid in the street. seems like some of the town houses have them too , maybe every other one.

it may be a cleanout or just a vent. houses in buffalo ny have a cast iron pipe with a slotted lid even with the driveway cement. if you listen when someone's flushing a toilet, you can hear the water flow. this is what leaves me to believe its a vent for the sewer line. it also stinks every now and then!
