  • Leak from base of water heater

What is this black plastic thing (bottom right, about an inch square) on the underside of my electric water heater? It's dripping - what should I do? Thank you!

Hi, really can say what that thing is, are there more? they could just be feet, supports?, any water dripping, it could be starting to leak. Remove any inspection covers after turning off the power at the breaker panel and see if any elements have started to leak or any other fittings, if its old, the tank could be starting to leak, if its in an area or has a drip pan under it that wont cause any damage if it lets go, you could just wait for it to go, or get a replacement ready, Hot water tanks are available every where. A competent homeowner can replace one themselves. Plenty of big box stores have guides detailing the process of replacement, and also the hot water tanks and fittings to accomplish the task. Get everything beforehand and its a Saturday afternoon job.

that plastic piece could be a plug where the company injected the foam insulation that surrounds the inner tank. if there's water there, it could be just condensation or if its a steady drip, drip, could indicate a leak at the heating elements where they screw into the tank, it could also mean a leak through the tank. better look for a new one.
