Repair of cast iron plumbing

How do you pull a cast iron waste pipe apart at the joint?
I am refering to the old style. Is it a lead type sealant they used?
Can I pull it apart by heating it up?

The old way to make this joint was to stuff in Oakum around the pipe, then pour molten lead in around it.(to remove,just reverse the procedure) You will need to melt the lead with a torch. Is this joint a vertical or a horizontal?
