We just bought a new home... and I don't know all the terminology, so bare with me. When we pull the stopper up to make the water come out of the shower head instead of the tub faucet, a lot of water still comes out of the faucet, especially the hot water. In turn, the water pressure coming out of the shower head is pretty low. Any suggestions?? Jolie

You stated you pull a stopper up to activate the shower so I presume you have a diverter type tub spout with a small knob on top that is lifted to turn the shower function on.
You also stated that this is new construction, but you did not mention whether this problem has occurred from the beginning or whether the problem is new, but either way it doesn't matter much.
In normal operation the diverter tub spouts have an internal valve that is simply a flat plate with an O-ring. When the handle is down the water flows through the spout in the normal manner, and when the handle is up, the o-ring valve plugs up the spout, which in turn forces the water to go up and out the shower head.
If the water is leaking out the ub faucett when you select the shower function something is obviously preventing the o-ring valve from sealing properly. The most likely causes are either the o-ring is slighly mispositioned or the stem is not tightened properly to hold the O-ring in place.
Most of the tub faucetts are simply threaded onto a 1/2inch male thread adaper on the end of a copper stub out from the wall.
Once the spout is removed you can dissassemble the diverter and check the o-ring and its mount to insure it is positioned correctly,,
However, since this is new construction your plumber should warrant his work and you might be best to contact the General Contractor or the plumber to correct the problem.
