All drains are equiped with traps that are supposed to hold water to act as a seal to prevent sewer gases from getting into the house. If you are getting sewer gases something is causing the water to be sucked out of the traps. Either the vent is clogged or the vent system is inadquate.

LazyPup is right, but here is one too. I was remodeling an old house one time and the previouse owner had installed a shower without installing a trap. So you may want to see if there is even a trap under thereIf you think a professional is expensive,
Just see what till you see what an amature will cost you!!
