  • Sanitary Tee as a horizontal run cleanout?

    IRC code:

Can I use a sanitary tee as a vertical oriented cleanout on a horizontal drain. This is located just before the 3" drain exits the house serving the code requirements. Code says that it can not be used for a change in direction to horizontal, but does not reference its use as a cleanout only. Code also says that this cleanout should be vertical.

I do not have enough vertical distance between the pipe and the basement concrete floor to use a combo T. A wye would work, but only enough room for a cleanout plug (therefore not vertical) and much more of a pain to re-concrete around.

Can't figure the reasoning for not allowing this.

If you are making a line cleanout you may not use sanitary tee's, Wye & 1/8th bends or combo's, you must use a "Rodding Tee"

A rodding tee has a radius curve in both directions to permit rodding the line both upstream and downstream.
