I'm remodeling have got my wet wall stripped to the studs and am adding a bathroom. I'd like to remove my cast iron vent stack and replace it with plastic. I'll leave the cast iron in the basement that goes out to the septic tank. Is it better to clean out the last cast hub and join the pvc there, or just cut the hub off and use a rubber transition coupling. (I'm pretty sure I know what would be easier, but is the other way better?)

Either way is perfectly acceptable by code.

Cutting cast can be a real chore if you don't have a Cast Iron Snap Cutter handy. I normally just break out the last section of cast, clean the hub then seal the PVC into the hub.

Before you break it out, keep in mind that cast is very heavy. When removing a stack it is best to start at the top and work your way down to insure the heavy sections above cant fall down on you.

I am wondering why you want to pull the cast out? Cast is not only nearly permanent, but it also is a lot quieter than PVC stacks.

I've got an old toilet I'm taking out, and the wye is almost 180 degrees opposite from where the new waste line will go. Is it possible to loosen the old wye and rotate and repack it? Plus I need to add waste lines for a shower and sink. I thought it would be easier to just do it all with PVC than to piece in a wye and sanitary tee. The house is about 80 years old. Would insulation around a pvc stack deaden the noise in the wall?
