  • Leaky Shower

Is there an easy way to stop a leaking shower? There is a heavy drip from the shower elbow. Thanks for any suggestions.

When you say "Shower Elbow" I am presuming you mean the 90deg elbow fitting on the top of the shower riser to which the chrome shower arm is attached.

If this is correct, the fitting is technically a transition fitting which changes from copper or CPVC input to a 1/2" Female Iron Pipe thread output.

Given that the input end of that elbow is either soldered or solvent welded to the pipe it is highly unlikely that the leak will be on the input end.

The leak is then most likely on the threaded output end of the elbow which can be very easily fixed, assuming of course that you have the proper drop ear elbow and that the elbow is properly secured to the framing or wooden blocking inside the wall.

You begin by unscrewing the chrome shower arm pipe and pull it out.

Clean the threads thoroughly and apply either 3 full wraps of RED "Triple Density" PTFE (teflon) tape or pipe dope to the threads and screw the fitting back in tight. That should resolve your leak.
