what type connector would you use under the slab to
connect cast and pvc? would a fernco or the like be suitable?

I'd personally choose the No-Hub Band as I have found that the fernco being rubber allows the pipe to move, this would cause a lip where solids could collect and cause problems. The No Hub Band's stainless steel bands hold the joints in position much better. Make sure to firmly pack sand under the PVC so as to be even with the cast iron. Also I would use a concrete bonding agent before filling in the hole so as to keep ground water from entering. This can be gotten from any lumber yard such as Lowe's or Home Depot.
If you think a professional is expensive,
Just see what till you see what an amature will cost you!!
