I am getting ready to install a new tub. When looking at the directions for the new facuet, it says the water pressure for the hot and cold needs to be equal. My hot water line has less pressure. What causes this?

In order to offer an answer we would need additional information:
1. How did you test the water pressure?
2. How old is the house?
3. what kind of pipe do you have? (Copper, CPVC, PEX, PVC etc)
4. Is the water heater completely piped in or is it connected with flex lines?
5. What size of lines are connected to the shower mixer? hot & cold
6. What is the diameter of your house main water supply line?
This should be enough information to start but we may need more as we look into this problem.Last edited by LazyPup; 03-17-2006, 04:06 PM.

If you are in the US, your hot and cold pipes have identical static pressure. Once you turn on the shower, and also turn on other cold or hot items, then pressure losses due to pipe sizes and lengths can cause the dynamic pressure AT THE SHOWER VALVE to be different. If is is a pressue-balanced type of valve, it will compensate for this and keep the shower temp. constant. If it is not pressure balanced, your shower temp. will change.
