I am having a problem with the disposal and washing machine. Every time I try to run the disposal, water backs up from the washing machine drain. I can run water in the sink and have no problems. What can I do?

This means that the shared common drain betwen the disposer and the washing machine is clear. But you have blockage downstream of the most downstream of these appliances, which is allowing backup into the other.
A little pipe route observation and thinking on your part should make it clear where the problem could be, knowing what I said above... and then you will have to probably try to snake through the obstruction. You may have to disconnect like a p-trap first, and then insert the snake at that point. If you don't happen to own one, you can buy a very inexpensive hand op one at a home center. They are nice to have just for occasions like this. Plus, you could help out a friend or relative sometime also, and save them some money. Mechanical cleanout is better than trying to use, often useless, chemical drain cleaning agents.
