I noticed that there are two kinds of fittings for pex - metal crimp and plastic flair-it fittings. The flair-it fitting look simpler. Are they simpler and as good?
The Plumbing Code require that all fittings used on PEX tubing for potable water distribution systems MUST BE crimp fittings in accordance with ASTM (American Society of Testing & Materials) standard's F-876 & F-877. There is one variation that is a specialized crimp fitting approved for use with a powered crimping tool which bears the ASTM certification number F-1806.
When lookng at PEX tubing and materials in the hardware for home supply store you will often see some compression fittings which are often called "Qest Fittings" Compression fittings may be used on PEX tubing for low pressure application in the HVAC industry such as hydronic heating loops, but they are prohibited from use in the Plumbing trade for potable water distribution.
For Plumbing you must use the proper crimp fitting, fitted in place with a code approved crimping tools, and with some rare exception, each joint much be checked with a code approved "Go/No go" guage.
