How much salt

I have a single tank Maytag water softner & I was wondering if I am affecting the performance of it by only keeping the tank about 1/4 full of salt? The reason I do this is because when I was keeping the tank 1/2 full I kept getting "salt dams".

The only problem you could have is if it does get too low you will stir up sediment when it regenerates which may pass through the screen into the control, general rule is to keep the salt over the water level. Or try using solar salt (granulated ) instead of pellets if that is what you are using currently.
