In a previous thread, LazyPup mentioned "The code approved choices are Galvanized Iron Pipe (almost never used today), Copper, PEX or CPVC. (PVC prohibited)". Where does the black (material {?}) used from well pump to house fall in?

The Plumbing codes define the water lines in two classes..Supply and distribution.
Supply lines are the lines from the municipal main or well to the structure.
Distribution lines are the lines used to distribute the water inside the structure.
Under the International Residential Code the materials approved for Supply lines are:
ABS plastic pipe, Asbestos Cement Pipe, Brass pipe, Copper types K,L, & M both rigid and seamless roll pipe, Ductile Iron Pipe, Galvanized steel (may not be run under a slab),CPVC, Polybutelene, Polyethelene, PEX tubing, Pex-Al-Pex pipe and PVC.
For Distribution the IRC allows Brass Pipe, Copper types K.L & M both rigid and roll, CPVC,Galvanized steel (under slab it must be facotry wrapped and all joints field wrapped), Polybutelene(PB), Pex Tubing, Pex-Al_Pex pipe.
For Supply the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) permits Asbestos cement pipe, Brass pipe, Copper K, L and M, both rigid and roll pipe, CPVC, Ductile Iron (for direct burial it must be facotory wrapped and all joints field wrapped), Galvanized steel (for direct burial it must be facotory wrapped and all joints field wrapped), Polyethelene (PE),PEX tubing, PVC.
For Distribution the IRC limits it to Brass pipe, copper K,L,& M (type M only if a minimum of 6" above the floor),CPVC, Ductile iron (under slab it must be facotry wrapped and all joints field wrapped), Galvanized steel (under slab it must be facotry wrapped and all joints field wrapped), PEX tubing. -
