I currently have a 2 handle turn style(round) bathtub fixtures. not sure the brand. If I put in a new American Standard two-handle model, it is and easy fit or do I have to rip the wall open and change the entire valve system?
    Thanks

Changing the whole valve would require access inside the wall, either from the tub/shower side, or from the rear if that is accessible. You can NOT simply put any old brand/style of parts into an existing valve. The only thing you can do without interior wall access is get exact brand/model replacements for handles, trim, and stems. If it is a very popular model, you might find handles and trim in some other finished besides the traditional polished chrome.

You should check with local authorities to see if replacing the shower valve will require you to update to an anti-scald type, usually single handles. There are chrome trim plates available which accomodate doing this.
