Bath tap & shower head

Please, I am a complete novice, but do want to give this a try.
Could someone help, I have a bath tap with shower hose from the centre. The barrel at the centre moves up and down to regulate whether to use the shower head, or full flow for the bath. At the moment all I can get is the shower head spray, whether the barrel is in the up or down position. Is this a washer that needs changing, if so how do I go about it.

sounds to me like the washer is stuck , closing off the bath spout. Most times the spout screws onto a copper pipe protruding from the wall. Look also for a small grub screw that may be on the under side of the spout, some spouts also have these and this must be loosened before you try to remove the spout.
