  • help with clogged toilet

    hi,

ok, so my toilet is clogged and will barely drain. i fear this may be b/c last night i dumped wax into it when i needed to dispose of the liquid (candle like) potpouri thing in the bath. i know this was idiotic in retrospect but it seemed harmless at the time. this morning i poured hot water down and tried to plunge it but it didn't work. does anyone have any help they can offer? i am an idiot in need of assistance. tx so much.

Yep, your right, pouring hot wax down your toilet wasn't the smartest of ideas. The wax probably solidified (almost immediately) and then you flushed a solid, pliable piece (or tried) down the "S" bend and it is probably jammed in that area.
You are going to need to try to snake out the toilet and hopefully break up the wax allowing it to flush away in a smaller piece. You can buy small "snakes' at most hardware stores pretty cheaply for a DIY job. You could also try bending up a wire coat hanger to go around through the trap of your toilet, or remove the toilet and clean it out that way.

It may also be that the wax got caught up further down the line and in this case your best option might be a plumber with a long snake.
Little about a lot and a lot about a little.
Every day is a learning day.

DO NOT USE A SNAKE to clean a watercloser bowel because doing so can and generally will damage the porcelain finish on the bowel.

The proper tool for clearing a watercloset bowel trapway is a "closet auger"

I am attaching an illustration of a closet auger and how it is used.

Closet augers are relatively inexpensive and can b e purchased in any local hardware or home supply center. a closet auger should be part of the DIY tool kit in any household.

thanks so much for your thoughts. i've gone out and purchased an auger (not sure how to know if it is a closet auger or not) and a serious looking plunger. thanks so much for your help.

Honestly, you may have permanent damage. The wax clinging to the trapways may never be completely removed, and thus will always cause slow flush action.
