Copper pipe hangers

I have been experiencing some banging and shaking in my water pipes lately so I purchase some pipe hangers. The type that fit around the pipe and you screw into the joists. Leaves a little room between pipe and hanger with fins that allow for the pipe to constrict and expand. Now if i grab the pipe I can move it back and forth after I put the hangers on the pipe barely moves at all. How much play should the pipe have? I have noticed that all my pipe noises have stopped. Is there a down side to having barely any play in the pipe?

It seems to me that a pipe is not meant to be a moving mechanical part. Long ago, even though I probably did not need to, I added clamps to runs of pipe and all's been fine since. I just like the idea of good workmanship.

The reason they "bang" is because of the movement, a nice snug fit is what your looking for. If you bought 1/2" plumbing pipe clamps ( or 3/4" if that's the pipe size) as long as your not crushing the pipe then your good to go.

No crushing of pipe since i bought the ones that are meant to accomandate the expansion and contraction of the pipe.
