  • Plumbing to washer

Recently plumbed for a new washer ... I installed my lines from the two lines that are entering the hot water heater inside the house. My wife was washing clothes yesterday and noticed that all we were getting inside the washer was hot water. After a little research I found out that I mislabeled the lines. When we moved in the pilot wasnt lit on the Hot water heater so I just took an educated guess as to which one was correct. So to temporarily remedy this (gonna take some time to pull out the washer/dryer to get to my shut off valves) I shut off the valve labeled cold (which is really the hot) and my wife washed with the setting on "hot" with the idea that it would pull water from what it thinks is the hot water side and get cold water. To sum it up, it seems that all we are getting is hot water. Of the two lines from the HWH one feels warmer to the touch that the other. Ill have to relabel my lines and switch my hoses to the correct line, but Im worried that if this doesnt work then I might have plumbed wrong. Think just moving the hoses to the correct valve will work?

which valve(s) are you talking about? a washer supply valve has a hot water connection on one side and a cold water connection on the other. a center valve handle on the valve shuts off or turns on both sides of the valve. one output hose goes to the hot, the other to the cold.

Two lines don't "come" from the HW tank, one goes "too" it (cold water supply) and one comes "from" it (hot water) Semantics I know but a better way to explain the situation. Did you follow the supply and hot lines "ALL" the way to the HW tank, to make sure that they are what you assumed they were? I've seen people assume that the two lines they see are hot and supply, when in fact the supply came from one direction and the hot line went off in the other, what the client was seeing was branching of the hot lines.

Turn off the valve that should be hot and see if you get hot water, then turn off the other valve and see what water you get, like you mentioned you might have just confused the supply lines and reversed the lines to the washer.
But if your getting hot water from both lines then you plumbed the washer to a hot supply line for both hot and cold.

Or, You have a recirculation loop and you are tied in at the wrong spot.

          ^^^^^^^^^

          that's a good point !!

That might explain why one is hot and the other luke warm.

Im dumb. Fixed my problem. Once I got home and had time to look at it I found my problem. When I plumbed my hot and cold lines I did it before the HWH was lit and so my father in law and myself had to sorta guess which line was the hot. After looking at the lines I realize the the line with the shut off valve is the cold going into the HWH and the other line is the hot coming out.... when we first moved in to the house I knew absolutely nothing about plumbing! It all makes sense now though! Turns out we had it backwards, so I just changed my lines behind the washer and it works fine now. Thanks for the feedback and help!
