  • Kitchen drains into sump pit

Our sump pump went out today. I pull the old one out, and its caked in sludge. Through some following of pipes, our kitchen water (dish washer/garbage disposal and kitchen sink) flows into that pit. Is that normal?

a sump pump is supposed to drain ground water or water that leaks through the foundation to a pit. it is not meant to drain washing machine "gray-water" or kitchen waste water. food particles go into the septic system or city sewer.

      Sump pit...

Are you sure it is a sump pit? Is it possible it could be a pit with a macerator for pumping the sludge from the house appliances to the septic tank?
