I was attempting to replace my old tub drain, but the old pipe broke where the shoe connects to it. am I right in saying that the whole waste & overflow assembly should be replaced, also it's a cast iron tub, and the wall behind the drain is accessible, however would be very difficult to dig under to access the pipe. How would you go about getting this done? I would like to not remove the tub if possible.

I had to do this on my folks old tub, but it wasn't cast iron. The tub was resting on a concrete sub-floor and the drain and shoe was embedded in concrete. I had to chisel out enough concrete to remove the old shoe and drain to insert the new shoe. Once this was done I didn't have enough "meat" to connect the drain so I used a fernco connector to accomplish this. -
i am attempting to chisel where the drain pipe is, is seems that there is slab on both sides, and where the pipe lays is dirt and a whole lot of what i think is tar, IDK but it's hard to chisel because it gives way and doesn't break, anyone know how to remove this stuff?Comment
