How might a tread mill belt splice be repaired?

I suppose you can treat it as if it were a leather drive belt and use a lacing type splice. go to an industrial supply or msc or mcmaster carr and find belt splicing kits. these have a metal hammer on interlocking splice with a metal lace. old style used a compressed cat-gut splice.
