    Floor installation

    Since I’m new, I thought I’d share a few recent projects. This one is a floor replacement I did last summer with conventional materials and methods. The house is a modified a-frame cabin. The main room is 20’ x 20’. The original floor was 2.75” oak tongue in groove. But because it had been built out over the years, and because there were a lot of DIY repairs on a budget by the previous owner, one 12’ x 8’ section was replaced with brown painted plywood:

    I wanted something by the door that was essentially rot proof, so I decided to lay tile on top of cement board. Then, when we tore out the plywood, we discovered that the underlay was thicker in this area than the rest of the floor. This meant to make the new hardwood level with the surround, I’d have to tear it out, which was beyond the budget and time allowed for the project. So instead I decided to trim it.

    Finally, I replaced that awful gray hollow door with a solid wood door:
