  • Grape vine growing along the ground

Hi everyone, I have a question about my grape vine. It’s growing along the ground rather than vertically. Is this normal, or should I provide support to help it grow upward?

Hi! It’s actually pretty common for a young grape vine to start spreading along the ground if it doesn’t have anything to climb on. Grapes are naturally climbing plants, so they do best when given some kind of vertical support like a trellis, arbor, or wire system. Without support, they’ll just sprawl across the ground, which isn’t ideal because it can lead to disease, pests, and reduced air circulation.

If your vine is still young, now’s a great time to train it. You can gently tie it to a stake or guide it up a structure as it grows. This will not only keep it healthier but also make it easier to manage and harvest later on. Once it gets going, grapevines grow fast and can become quite vigorous, so getting it upright early makes a big difference. Do you already have something in place, or are you thinking about setting up a support system soon?

Thanks for the info! I actually don’t have any support set up yet, but I’m definitely thinking about it now. Do you think a simple wooden stake would work to start, or is it better to go straight to something like a wire trellis?

You're welcome! A wooden stake is a great way to start, especially if your grapevine is still small. It’ll help guide it upward and keep it off the ground. Just make sure it’s tall and strong enough, and use something soft to tie the vine gently.

Later on, you can switch to a bigger setup like a wire trellis when the vine gets bigger and needs more space to spread. Starting with a stake now makes everything easier down the road.

Thanks again! Also, should I start pruning the vine now, or is it better to wait until it’s more established?

If the vine is still young and just getting started, it’s usually better to wait a bit before doing any major pruning. Right now, the goal is to let it establish a strong root system and some solid growth. You can definitely pinch off any weak or straggly shoots to help it focus its energy, but hold off on any serious shaping until the vine is more established, typically after its first full growing season.

Once it's better established, regular pruning becomes really important for managing growth and encouraging more fruit later on.
