  • Black Mold on Bathroom Ceiling

While pulling down wallpaper in our downstairs bathroom, I found a large area of water damaged sheetrock with black mold on it around the air vent and in the corner of the shower area. The molded area is not currently moist but the black mold does rub off to the touch. How should I clean it? How should I prime the area and paint it to mitigate the possibility of the mold showing through or coming back? Thank you. [:0]

Hey Patricia, you should clean the area with any cleaning solvent. Get as much off and then prime it with a stainblocking primer, such as Kilz. It comes in an oil-based aeresol can. Wear a mask if you are using the spray can... It is very strong smelling. Re-apply the primer until you can't see the stain any longer. Then paint or wallpaper over it. Hope that helps.

Thanks Todd! I tried the Kilz and it really worked! My husband and his friend picked up a can and I applied it today (w/ a mask and goggles). The mold virtually disappeared.
