chandelier - remove and paint

Any suggestions for help with taking down a chandelier? I've no idea how to get the half 'dome' part off let alone the rest of it. I plan on spray painting it. It is now shiney brass and I have a darker, more antique-y can of spray paint. Has anyone done this and is priming necessary?

half dome?? you mean the canopy against the ceiling? Look for a large decorative nut, unscrew it and let the canopy down. The wires will be underneath the canopy and a pipe nipple and fixture strap. If the chandelier is real heavy there may be a hook to which it fastens to the house structure.
