formica wall covering

What is a good wall covering for formica walls. House was built in the 70's and the bathroom has formica sheets on the walls, instead of tearing them out I am wondering is there is a wall paper that would stick or a certain type of paint.

I would think that block sanding the surface would provide the 'tooth' for a paint.
