  • Question about pre-hung doors

Okay, I'm still working on the whole-house remodel project. For the last 3 weeks I've been painting which is easy enough but tedious. Anyway, my next question has to do with installing doors. I have no flooring yet in the house, and I have purchased pre-hung doors. Do I install the pre-hung doors before installing the flooring?

I feel like this is a dumb question, but I cannot find the answer anywhere.

    Thanks!

How perfect do you want the finish?
If you want perfection, get pre-hung doors WITHOUT the top and side trim, install the doors (shimmed frames), then put the door and hinge pins on the side. After the flooring is installed, install the top and side trim so the bottom of the side trim is flush with the new flooring (no gaps). The door should clear the floor when it is placed back in the frame. If your new flooring is ulta-thick and the bottom of the door hits it, you can trim or plane the bottom of the door until it clears. You can usually cut an inch off the bottom of a hollow core door without trouble - but usually don't need to remove more than 1/2 inch max in the worst case.
