  • Wallboard against ceiling

I have just hung new wallboard against existing ceiling. It's fairly tight. How should I go about finishing wallboard so that joint between wallboard and ceiling looks smooth.

sheetrock joints are slightly tapered. use a 4 inch putty knife and put a thin layer of mud on the joint. use paper tape on the joint. now drag the putty knife over the tape and mud, squeezing out as much mud as you can, embedding the tape in the mud. feather the edges. let dry completely before applying another coating of mud, again as thin as possible but feather out from the center. your final application should use a 12 inch knife with the compound again as thin as possible. knock down any high spots with a damp sponge AFTER the mud has dried. this will lessen the amount of dust from sanding.

      Wallboard

If you are referring to finished decorative wallboard (as opposed to drywall), then you would finish with some sort of trim. Is this the type of wallboard you have?

If it is a drywall to drywall joint, then you should tape and finish. A tutorial for doing this is shown at Drywall Finishing For Beginners - Taping Inside Corners
