  • Best wood types for new decks and fences

Hi there! Can someone share advice on the best wood types for long-term durability for new decks and fences? Cedar, pressure-treated pine, or redwood? I need information on how they hold up in terms of weather resistance and maintenance?

    Thank you!

    Hi DK!

Cedar's nice. Smells good, looks good, and bugs don't like it. But it's not cheap, and you'll be out there staining it every few years unless you like that weathered look.

Pressure-treated pine? It's the budget option. It'll do the job, but it's not winning any beauty contests. Plus, some folks aren't crazy about all those chemicals.

Redwood's the Cadillac of deck woods. Gorgeous stuff, tough as nails. But be ready to shell out some serious cash for it.

Honestly? They'll all hold up okay if you take care of them. But nothing lasts forever outdoors. You'll be doing maintenance no matter what, so pick what looks good to you and fits your budget.

You might want to ask around your neighborhood, see what's working for other people. Sometimes the local climate can make a big difference.
