I'll probably put a humidistat on the fan. It seems like just a small fluctuation in the humidity percentage triggers the frost. I'l have to research the best setting. Based on the charts I've seen, if I set it at 60% it might not shut off. I may just wait until I reroof at which time I'll also switch out the square roof vents for a ridge vent. I'm sure this will make the fan draw more air from the soffit vents (as opposed to the square ones which are a bit lower and closer to the power fan).
In any event, the roof has been this way for 30 years, so I can't imagine that a couple more years will matter. Besides, when I do reroof it will be a tearoff and I'll also replace the sheathing that has become a bit "discolored" over 30 years. It willl also be easier to replace the baffles then. (Who knows, I may get my neighbor to help me do that now anyway.)
This must be a common problem in many north-facing attic slopes. No doubt most homeowners probably don't know (or care) or are not as persnickety as I am. (Maybe "obsessed" is a better word.)
Thanks again. Merry Christmas!
