  • Garage Door Repair or Plans?

I’m seeking advice on fixing my garage door. Yesterday, the large spring above the door broke. While my wife pushes the button, I can still lift the door. However, the door is extremely heavy. Is it possible to fix this myself by simply replacing the spring? If so, where can I purchase it, and how can I ensure I get the correct one? Do any garage door repair stores in Mesa, AZ offer door repair services? Alternatively, do I need to replace the entire lift mechanism?
    Thanks

    Hi,
You can fix this by replacing the broken spring without needing to replace the entire lift mechanism. However, replacing a garage door torsion spring is a risky job because the spring is under high tension. If not handled correctly, it can cause serious injury. If you decide to do it yourself, you will need to buy the correct replacement spring.

To get the right spring, measure the length of the old spring, the thickness of the wire, and the inside diameter of the spring. You will also need to know whether your door uses a left-wound or right-wound spring. Take these measurements to a garage door parts supplier to make sure you get the exact match.

In Mesa, AZ, there are garage door repair shops that sell springs and also offer repair services. You can call a few local stores to ask if they have the spring you need or if they provide installation.

If you are not comfortable working with a high-tension spring, it is safer to hire a professional to do the replacement.

    Hope this helps!
