  • Garage door having trouble opening

    Hi all,

My garage door opener is only closing halfway and then opens again. It does this regardless of whether the opener is attached the door or not (both under load and not).

I noticed that the gear that engages the chain is sitting at an angle. There's what looks to be a washer that's sitting off at an angle and the pole going up from the motor is at an angle as well.

Is there any simple fix besides replacing the opener? Any idea as to what might have caused this?

You need to replace the gear kit. It is available at liftmaster.com

Replacing that part will only address the symptom. You may have a heavy door, worn hardware, broken spring, bad limit switch or limit switch out of adjustment. Be sure to discover why this part failed, as it does not typically fail on its own.

Have you cleaned your tracks recently? Built up dirt can cause issues when it comes to the garage door opening and closing.

Be aware of the position of the chain when replacing the gear and sprocket. If you do not place the chain back in the original position, then your limits will need minor or major adjustment. Also use the grease pack that comes with the kit and coat the plastic gear heavily, if you don't you will find yourself replacing the gear again in a months time.
